Scenes from The Magnificent Ambersons
Isabel greets Eugene after being apart for 20 years, while possessive George glares after her.
George and Uncle Jack at the train station. After the death of Isabel and Major Amberson, and the discovery that the Amberson fortune is gone, Jack leaves to take a consulship position in some undisclosed location. Jack is so broke that George has to lend him $100 (that scene was deleted during editing). Jack has a great speech in this scene. Even though his life has taken a turn for the worse, he can still reflect on the past with characteristic good humour and style. This image is really exceptional in terms of lighting and the use of deep focus.
Eugene Morgan and Major Amberson
George stares out of a window at Eugene after refusing to let Eugene see Isabel on her death bed.
Fanny collapses against the boiler, exhausted from walking around town looking for a new place to live.
Major Amberson ponders the origins of life.
Lucy and George part company.
George and Isabel.
This is an iris shot, a device that was popular in silent films. Here, Eugene's horseless carriage drives off with the carefree Ambersons laughing and singing. This image, reminiscent of a Currier and Ives print, symbolizes the life that the Ambersons once enjoyed.
